STRATEGY
Vietnam’s QSR market is growing rapidly, yet among young consumers, visibility alone no longer guarantees relevance. While Jollibee entered 2025 with strong scale and emotional equity, winning youth culture remained challenging as competitors like KFC and Lotteria dominated youth-facing visibility, and students increasingly ignored deal-led promotions. The challenge went beyond awareness. Jollibee’s core associations—joy, family bonding, and child-friendly experiences—were powerful but risked feeling nostalgic rather than culturally current for Gen Z. At the same time, young consumers wanted more than brand messaging; they wanted spaces to express themselves and create content with their peers.
Objective 1: Build a Scalable Youth Participation Platform
Create a sustainable, nationwide approach to engaging students through campus life and peer communities – where relevance is socially earned, not bought.
Objective 2: Extend Youth Relevance Through Peer-Led Amplification
Multiply the impact of on-campus engagement beyond physical activations by building experiences students choose to share, making peer-generated content the primary driver of reach.
Objective 3: Convert Youth Engagement into Store Behaviour
Deliver incremental sales and transactions by translating campus participation into measurable purchases through trackable rewards – without relying on deep discounting.
Recognising this opportunity, Jollibee built The Jolly Journey as a nationwide youth platform across campuses. Rather than treating school tours as simple activations, the brand transformed each campus stop into a participatory stage designed for self-expression. Through music, interactive experiences, and talent showcases, students were encouraged not just to attend, but to perform, create, and share. Every campus interaction generated shareable stories that naturally amplified across social channels, turning students into the campaign's media engine – and linking these moments to trackable in-store rewards for measurable business impact.
INSIGHT
The target audience for The Jolly Journey was Vietnamese youth aged 15-24, spanning two key life stages: high school students navigating intense academic pressure and tightly scheduled school life, and university students balancing lectures, social life, and growing independence. Together, this generation represents one of Vietnam’s most influential consumer groups. While they are frequent users of quick-service restaurants, they are also highly selective about the brands they engage with. Students don’t want another ad, they want a stage. Campus culture in Vietnam thrives on performances, clubs, music, and public recognition. Young people are far more likely to engage in experiences that allow them to perform, express themselves, and be seen by their peers. The success of campus talent shows and club activities demonstrates that students crave participatory platforms – not passive brand exposure. If friends don't show it, it doesn't spread. Youth social behaviour is deeply rooted in peer-driven sharing. Food discovery and event participation often spread through class group chats, campus communities, and short-form video platforms, where students share moments with friends through photos, clips, and tags. What travels fastest is not brand messaging, but authentic experiences created and documented by students themselves. Joy is a form of relief. Academic pressure, part-time work, and constant digital stimulation leave students with little patience for forced brand messaging. But shared moments of fun, support, and recognition feel valuable – especially when they are culturally fluent and socially easy to share. For youth, an event only matters if it gives them a stage to perform and a story to share. By turning campuses into stages where students could perform, create content, and share their moments with peers, the brand sought to transform everyday campus interactions into organic social amplification – ultimately converting youth participation into meaningful brand engagement and store visits.
CREATIVE IDEA
Big Idea "Turn every campus into a stage. Turn every student into a story." Rather than treating students as an audience, The Jolly Journey treated them as co-creators. The campaign was designed around one social logic: if you give students something worth showing their friends, they will do the marketing for you. Each school stop was designed as a social-first event environment combining music performances, minigames, scholarships and interactive moments with Bee mascot – the consistent platform anchor. These experiences encouraged students not only to attend but also to perform, celebrate with friends, and capture moments worth sharing. The Bee mascot served as the campaign's emotional connector. Familiar, warm, and highly recognisable, it translated Jollibee's joy equity into a youth-friendly presence that felt approachable rather than commercial. The Bee's appearances – dancing, duetting, and playing with students – became some of the most organically shared content of the campaign. The format is adapted to different school contexts to stay culturally relevant:
- Universities: higher-energy, stage-led formats built around talent competitions, KOL interactions, and music gala moments that encouraged cheering and community participation.
- High schools: lighter formats paired with career-orientation workshops, helping students explore their future while keeping the experience positive and engaging.
Across every campus stop, recognition moments, group challenges, and shared reactions were intentionally designed to spark peer recommendation. Students were treated as the main storytellers, not an audience for brand messaging, naturally generating user-created content that amplified the campaign across social platforms. This flexible format enabled The Jolly Journey to scale nationwide while keeping a simple social logic: create moments students want to share. By connecting these moments with trackable in-store rewards, Jollibee turned youth participation into measurable business impact.
CONNECTION PLAN
Before the journey: Drive awareness and exexcitement
Jollibee's social platforms to spark curiosity and recruit students for The Jolly Journey. Instead of heavy advertising, the campaign activated trusted student communities, using interactive minigames like “Guess the Judges/KOLs” to trigger tagging, sharing, and peer-to-peer spread. Teaser content co-created from Jollibee store TikTok accounts captured the excitement of school seasons, while talent recruitment across campus clubs converted early buzz into active participation before the first event.
The Jolly Journey: Turn Campus Participation into Social Content
The campus tour became the core social engine of the campaign. Rather than relying on brand-produced content alone, the experience was designed to let students themselves generate and distribute moments from the event. On-ground activities – performances, duets, challenges, and check-in photo spots – encouraged students to create and share their own content on TikTok and Facebook, linking offline participation with online conversation. The Bee Storytelling Series continuously highlighted campus moments and upcoming tour stops, sustaining curiosity and brand love. Talent Journey content - including recruitment stories, behind-the-scenes moments, and winner storytelling – motivated more students and friends to join the competition across different youth communities. Influencers and artists appearing on campus further expanded reach by co-creating content with students. As a result, participants themselves became the main storytellers, generating authentic user-generated content that continuously attracted new audiences.
The legacy: Sustaining Momentum & Conversion
After each campus stop, Jollibee extended the journey from social buzz to store visits. Content shifted from recruitment to celebration, with recap videos, highlight photos, and winner storytelling shared across TikTok and Facebook, keeping The Jolly Journey visible even after activations ended. Participation unlocked trackable rewards redeemable at nearby Jollibee stores, directly connecting campus excitement with real purchase behaviour and turning engagement into measurable business impact.
